What is Pilates?

Pilates was first developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th Century as a fitness regime. He later refined the exercises when working with dancers from the New York City Ballet.

Pilates is an exercise based programme that places emphasis on core control, which means strengthening your core muscles. It differs from traditional abdominal and leg strengthening due to its focus on alignment and control. This ensures that the correct muscles are used, resulting in specific toning with each exercise, which helps prevent the body from moving incorrectly.

Pilates helps you to

  • Strengthen and tone muscles

  • Increase your flexibility

  • Improve your posture

  • Develop body awareness

  • Improve your general well being

  • Reduce back and joint pain

The exercises progress from basic mat work exercises where you focus on co-ordination, breathing and control, to more complex sequences of dynamic exercises using equipment such as resistance bands and exercise balls.
